MY GPO FAMILY - BY JOHN CHENERY - A LIGHT STRAW PUBLICATION.

In June 2017, I was fortunate to receive a copy of My GPO Family by John Chenery and although the book is not about " The Factories" I found it extremely interesting and I'm sure that anyone who has worked in telecommunications at the GPO and/or BT will find it the same, both interesting and enlightening.

Unlike many other books dedicated to the history of the GPO Telephone Service, which have concentrated on the technical side and the advancement of technology. This book is concerned with the non-technical support operations carried out in what used to be called the Telephone Manager's Office. The subjects covered include Accounting, Customer Services, Sales and the ever mysterious topic of "Traffic", along with the relevant interfaces with the technical processes that they supported. Other chapters describe the Post Office Tower, Bletchley Park, Premium Bond Computer ERNIE and the Colossus equipment, designed by the Post Office and built and assembled within the Post Office Factories which helped Bletchley Park to crack the ENIGMA CIPHER MACHINE and shorten WW2.

If, like me, you ever worked on detached-duty in Telephone Exchanges around the country this book will bring back memories from the distant past - I read some chapters a couple of times, they were so interesting and brought flooding back, a huge amount of very pleasant memories.

GREAT NEWS-  An abridged version of the book is now available. It's 370 pages as opposed to the 428 of the full version, but this makes it a 'large letter' which is cheaper to post !   It's lost very little of the story and at £10.55 Including UK postage, it's quite a good deal.

Both books can be seen at www.mygpofamily.com
