About Me

Started in 1981, in the 3rd year of my apprenticeship moved to the 6th floor J-Block (FL16) then managed by Ted Franklin. John Lewis took over for a short period followed by Graham Ferguson.

I spent many happy years as a filed service engineer working on MAC, M6000, RATES amongst others. Then Baj offerd an opportunity to get involved with what became Network Support Services (Civil Engineering to you and me)  in both of the startup areas of Dorset and Cornwall.

Following this I moved on to the helpdesk, which has now matured into a NOC (Network Operations Centre), as the point of contact for support of our deployed products.

In interesting journey... so far.

About Me

I started working in FL5 on the 6th Floor 'J' Block, Fordrough Lane, in April of 1980. Working on Incoming AC9 Signalling Units, Cable Locators and WB400/600 Equipment. Moving to H2 when the new buildings were erected and then working on Microfiche Readers for a while. I see there is a picture of me on your site, working on those Microfiche Readers (Wow ! I had hair then.) - Later I moved to the Training Centre with Dave Law. I remember training many a Factory Technician on the 3rd Floor of 'J' Block, what great times and great friendships. I also used to teach Unix and other courses on the M6000 to staff and other customers with George Squires.

Now working with special needs clients and living in a little town called

Ashley Falls, MA, USA.

About Me

Hello,

Well I worked at Fordrough Lane from 1988 to 1986. My Auntie, Flo Cook was a union rep. I was in J Block to start with on the "Old Crock" section. I worked on the cabling section. That was not a technical term but a name for the old girls who worked there. I had the pleasure of working with Elsie Bennett who taught me so much. As a fresh out of school 18 year old, I was put with these ladies and laughed so much!

I was then put on the Flow lines, soon to be transfered to H1. They were great days and I remember the strike and standing on the picket line. I was good friends with Tony Workman. I remember Christine Andrews, Lorraine, Hansa. I remember Eileen in the stores. We used to sing "Come on Eileen" (Dexys Midnight Runners), she loved it!

I organised Medieval Nights out for everyone at Coombe Abbey for a couple of years. I left to live in Guernsey, and took an early redunancy. I now live in Cyprus and have been here for 2 years.

About Me

Although not a former Post Offiice employee, there several areal of the work that I find fascinating, and am interested to find out more about via those who did work for the Post Office, especially in mail sorting.

About Me
My father used to work for The GPO firstly at Sherlock Street and then latterly at Fordrough Lane as a Technical Officer for many years. He joined post active service in 1947 and was working there when he suddenly passed away in 1971. After his death my mother was given the imperial Service Medal awarded to him posthumously. A long shot but anyone who has photos or memories of him please do share. His name was Gordon Weller but more often referred to as Sam.. thank you

About Me

Joined the GPO Telephones Birmingham in 1965 as an installation engineer based at Witton Depot. The site moved to Booth Street a few years later. Booth Street covered the NW of Birmingham out as far as Rowley Regis.

Eventually I transferred to the Midland Region as an Instructor Engineering at Shirley Training School. After about five years I was promoted to Inspector and served at Shirley, Hazelwell Lane and Ridgeacre Road doing a mix of Field and Control posts. I did some project work for BT HQ based at Swan House by London Bridge to change the Provision of Service Statistics and some temporary promotion to AEE for the Midland Region.

I saw that BT was going to float off the Factories as a stand-alone business so I applied for a post as Product Manager in what was to become Fulcrum Communications. I spent five years at Fordrough Lane being promoted to Marketing Manager before I eventually left just before Fujitsu finally completed their purchase, taking retirement/redundancy.

After leaving Fordrough Lane i did some work for an organisation called Wemtech which was run by John Spanton and David Sandercock, I was there for about two years. I then went to work for John Reardon at Modern Security Systems as a Business Manager. ADT bought them out and were then taken over by Tyco International who called the business ADT Fire and Security. I became Group Telecommunications Manager until BT offered a Turnkey Communications Option when I became redundant at the age of sixty which was when I wanted to retire anyway.
